I have a new title! The publisher asked me to change my original title and after a great deal of thought, and after achieving consensus with my editor, we settled on "All Happy Families", inspired by this famous quote from the first line of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina: "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."

The most exciting news yet! Avon Harper Collins will publish my novel, Real Life and Liars, in the summer of 2009. It's part of a two-book deal, and sold at auction. It's the story of a fading flower child who has her own idea about how to treat her breast cancer which doesn't include surgery, much to the dismay of her three grown children whose personal crises just might shake her resolve.

My short story, "The Last Time I Failed" has been nominated for inclusion in a Best of the Web 2007 anthology to be published by Dzanc Books. Thank you so much to the Scruffy Dog Review for nominating me! It's an honor. I'll make sure to update the site when I find out which stories make the final cut.

My essay titled "Challenge" is live at Doublestop Magazine, the online home for fiction, articles and essays about stringed instruments. This essay tells a story about a time I faced a challenge for my seat in the orchestra from a senior when I was a lowly freshman. You can read it here. Also, in the same issue my friend Terez Rose has a comprehensive review of several novels about violinists, and in the archive is an excerpt her novel. Enjoy!

I'm so excited to announce I've been promoted to co-editor for fiction at Literary Mama, an e-zine where I've been an editorial assistant in that department for a few years now (that means I did mostly proofreading). Now I'll have a hand in selecting the stories published at LM, and working with writers as necessary to shape their prose. I've been published there before. My story "What Kind of Mother" was featured in February 2005. Literary Mama is one of Forbes' Best of the Web. From the mission statement: "Literary Mama, an online literary magazine, features writing by mother writers about the complexities and many faces of motherhood."

I profiled British writer Eliza Graham for Literary Mama, the e-zine where I'm a copyeditor for the fiction section, besides contributing to fiction and profiles. The profile can be found here. It makes for fascinating reading, about her book, Playing With the Moon, and the issues of loss, heartbreak, love and race, and her interest in historical timelines as a subject for fiction.

I've had an essay accepted for a new online magazine called Doublestop, which covers fiction, essays and articles about all things relating to stringed instruments. My essay covers an event from my high school orchestra days, when someone challenged me for my seat in the first violin section, and how that became a turning point for me. I will send out another update when the essay is posted, with a link. I'm so pleased to have another publication credit. Every little bit helps.

Issue 160 of the Cimarron Review featuring my short story "Connection Lost" is out now. The issue is probably in some of the bigger bookstores, or you can order a single copy by going here and downloading the form and writing the issue number on it, if you are so inclined. It's always good to support literary magazines, especially if you are a writer yourself, because without our financial support, they will cease to exist. Thanks so much to my critique partners for helping me polish up this story. Also, don't forget you can subscribe to my website to get these updates as they come.

Announcing the publication of the anthology Full Circle, representing works by members of Ars Concordia, an online writing group of which I've been a member for nearly four years. Member Colin Galbraith lead the charge in the publication of Full Circle in memory of the Ars founder, Roy Abrahams. Roy would have loved it. My short story, "Tony Deranged," is featured. It's available for free download or for a very reasonable price to order online. [click here] It's a nonprofit venture, as a gesture to Roy. Enjoy…

I'm honored that a short story of mine, "Connection Lost", has been accepted for publication by the prestigious Cimarron Review. (http://cimarronreview.okstate.edu/) It will likely not appear until next year, so subscribe to the updates to find out when the journal will hit the newstands. I'm doubly proud because this short story was salvaged from a novel that didn't hit the mark. However, I didn't give up, and I'm so excited that this story will see the light of day after all.
